In March 2017, Thruway Center became home to the Copper Penny. Many people in the area were already familiar with the great selection and unique items to be found at the store from visiting corporate locations in Charleston and Savannah. This familiarity made the new addition to Thruway Center a much anticipated event. Store owner Margaret Dickerman is excited to bring the Copper Penny experience to people in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area.

Q: What drew you into the career of boutique ownership?

A: I’ve had a dream of owning my own boutique for quite some time. I was looking for a career that allowed me to be creative and work with the public, while also utilizing my business skills. I chose to open a Copper Penny franchise because I was familiar with the brand and knew it would be a valuable asset toe Winston-Salem.

Q: What can people familiar with the Copper Penny find at your store?

A: Being part of the Copper Penny line allows us the name recognition of a brand associated with beautiful, elegant clothes and accessories. Copper Penny has been in business for over 30 years, and I knew it would be beneficial to me to be aligned with a business with a wealth of knowledge and experience. For example, when we first opened, Penny Vaigneur of Copper Penny was very hands on in helping find the right styles and fit for our store. Their support helped ensure our success.

Q: What is unique about your boutique?

A: After being here at Thruway Center for a while I was able to learn my customers better and the demographic we serve. I want our store to be a place where mothers and daughters can shop together, so I work hard to appeal to a range of ages, taste and preferences, all while maintaining a high standard of fashion and quality. When I go to market in either New York or Atlanta, I keep an eye out for items that fall in line with our style, which I like to call Southern with an edge and some heat.

Q: Why did you locate your business at Thruway Center?

A: I have been shopping at Thruway Center for most of my life. I have always enjoyed the energy and the variety of this shopping center, and it is by far the busiest and best shopping experience Winston-Salem has to offer. As a store owner, I also appreciate the wonderful exposure and traffic found here. Hands down it was my number one choice for location.

Q: What has been the reaction to Winston-Salem’s Copper Penny?

We’ve had a wonderful response to Copper Penny joining the merchants of Thruway Center. Our ability to tailor our buying to the community helps us provide a unique shopping experience, allowing women in Winston-Salem a new avenue to express their own style. I have really enjoyed building our customer base and meeting so many great people.
